Can a group of horses running close to full speed stop very suddenly without getting hurt?

Yes it can be done...been there done that. It helps if the horses all know how to stop on their hind end, ie sliding stop. Horses get hurt when they attempt to stop on their front end by jamming their front legs in the ground with a hollowed out back ;-)
