I have lived in the Sacramento area since 1971 and am very interested in local history. I have never heard of this story. The best avenue I can suggest for you is to e-mail the California State Library. See a href="http://www.library.ca.gov/" rel="nofollow"http://www.library.ca.gov//a (look for services for the public, and you will find an e-mail address for questions). In my experience, the state library knows everything about CA history, and has people who will look up things like you asked just because they enjoy it.
